The ISCAR 5503223 is a WBMT-style cermet turning insert designed for precision metal turning operations on CNC and manual lathes. Manufactured to the Isoturn series specification, this left-hand insert features a PVD-applied TiCN and TiN multilayer coating over a cermet substrate, delivering wear resistance and edge stability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert carries an 80-degree trigon shape with a 5-degree relief angle and a 0.0079-inch corner radius, making it well suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes where tight tolerances and surface finish quality are critical. It is held in place by a screw-clamping method, consistent with standard ISO turning toolholders.
This insert is intended for use in turning applications targeting stainless steel and carbon or alloy steel workpieces, covering ISO material groups M and P. It fits within the Isoturn toolholder series and is commonly installed by machinists and toolroom technicians in production and job-shop environments. The maximum depth of cut is 2.00 mm (0.0787 inch), positioning this insert in light-to-moderate stock removal applications. The T-style chipbreaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation during continuous turning passes.
Designed for use with Isoturn series screw-clamp toolholders accepting WBMT-style inserts. Compatible primary workpiece materials are stainless steel (ISO group M) and steel (ISO group P).
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per facility safety procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque; do not over-tighten, as cermet substrates are brittle and susceptible to fracture under excessive clamp force. Inspect the insert seat and clamping components for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper support and alignment.
