The IRWIN IWAX3009 is a ship auger drill bit from the IRWIN SPEEDBOR SUPREME series, designed for boring large, clean holes through wood framing, timber, and structural lumber. Built from high-speed steel with an oxide coating, it measures 0.875 inches in diameter and delivers a full 18 inches of overall length with a 15-inch twist and flute length. The hex shank seats firmly in standard hex-drive chucks and right-angle drills commonly used by electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians during rough-in work. The standard point tip pulls the bit through material with minimal feed pressure.
This bit is suited for residential and light commercial rough-in applications where long-reach boring is required through wall plates, floor joists, and structural members. Electricians running conduit or cable, plumbers routing pipe penetrations, and HVAC installers routing refrigerant lines or ductwork all rely on long ship auger bits for access in tight framing cavities. The 18-inch overall length provides the reach needed when working inside wall assemblies or between floor systems without requiring an extension.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard ship auger bit compatible with hex-chuck drills and right-angle drill drivers accepting a 3-inch hex shank.
Installation is performed by licensed electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians during rough-in phases. Ensure the drill chuck is fully tightened on the hex shank before starting the bore. Always confirm there are no hidden utilities, wires, or pipes in the boring path before drilling through structural members. Follow all applicable codes, including NEC and IPC requirements, for minimum clearance between penetrations and structural edges.
