The IRWIN IR8035 is a 1/4-20 NS 2B hand tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a straight-flute configuration. Built from high carbon steel (HCS), this tap features four flutes and a 3-to-5-thread chamfer point style that guides entry and distributes cutting load across multiple teeth. It is driven by hand wrenching with a standard tap wrench, making it a practical tool for maintenance, repair, and fabrication work in plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and general trade applications. The NS thread form designates a non-standard thread profile, and the 2B tolerance class indicates a standard-fit internal thread suitable for general mechanical assembly.
This tap is suited for threading operations in ferrous and non-ferrous materials where a 1/4-20 NS thread is required. Typical applications include field repair of threaded fittings, fabrication of brackets or housings, and re-tapping of damaged threads in trade equipment. The hand-drive design makes it appropriate for portable, on-site use without power tooling. It is sold individually and packaged on a card for point-of-use access.
Designed as a hand tap for use wherever a 1/4-20 NS 2B right-hand internal thread is required; confirm thread form and tolerance class against the mating fastener or fitting specification before use.
This tap is installed by a mechanic, pipefitter, or trade technician using a standard hand tap wrench. Before tapping, drill the appropriate tap drill size for the 1/4-20 thread and secure the workpiece. Apply cutting fluid to reduce heat and extend tap life. Do not force the tap — back off a half turn periodically to break chips and prevent binding or breakage.
