The IRWIN IR50524 is a spear-point glass and tile drill bit designed for controlled, clean-entry drilling through hard, brittle surfaces including ceramic tile, glass, and similar materials. The cutting tip is tungsten carbide tipped, which provides the hardness required to penetrate glazed tile and glass without shattering the workpiece. With a 3/8 inch drill diameter, this bit handles common hole sizes for anchors, fixtures, and pass-throughs in tile installations. It is used by tile setters, plumbers, and electricians who regularly drill through finished tile surfaces on the job.
This bit is suited for residential and light commercial applications where holes must be made through ceramic tile, porcelain tile, glass block, or mirror surfaces. Typical use cases include drilling for wall anchors behind tile, creating penetrations for plumbing or electrical rough-in through tiled surfaces, and general tile work during installation or remodel. The spear-point geometry centers the bit on smooth, non-porous surfaces and reduces the risk of wandering at the start of the cut.
Designed for use in standard rotary drills when drilling glass, ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and similar hard brittle materials.
A licensed tile installer, plumber, or electrician typically installs this bit as part of tile penetration work. Before drilling, secure the workpiece and use masking tape or a guide to prevent the bit from wandering on smooth glazed surfaces. Use low drill speed with steady, light pressure and keep the tip cool with water or a wet sponge to prevent overheating and cracking. Do not use hammer or percussion mode when drilling glass or tile.
