The IRWIN 6640 is a hex rethreading die designed to restore damaged or corroded metric coarse external threads on fasteners, studs, and threaded rod. It cuts an M10x1.5 thread profile in the right-hand direction and fits a standard 1-inch hex driver or die stock. The body is machined from carbon steel, providing the hardness needed to cut through rust scale and deformed thread flanks without deflecting. Plumbers, pipefitters, HVAC technicians, and general maintenance mechanics reach for rethreading dies when a bolt or stud has been cross-threaded, rusted, or impact-damaged and replacement is not practical.
This die is suited for repair work on M10x1.5 metric coarse threaded fasteners found in mechanical equipment, HVAC equipment frames, plumbing fixture hardware, and structural assemblies. The right-hand thread direction matches the vast majority of standard metric fasteners encountered in residential and light commercial service work. It is sold individually and is compatible with any die stock or wrench that accepts a 1-inch hex-body die.
Designed for use with any die stock or wrench that accepts a 1-inch hex-body die. Restores M10x1.5 metric coarse external threads on bolts, studs, and threaded rod.
Rethreading dies are installed by licensed mechanics, HVAC technicians, plumbers, and electricians as part of fastener repair during equipment service. Before use, secure the workpiece and apply cutting oil to the die and the damaged thread to reduce friction and extend die life. Run the die onto the fastener slowly, backing off a partial turn periodically to clear chips. Never force the die past resistance without backing off, as doing so can fracture the die body or further damage the parent thread.
