The IRWIN 6545 is a hex rethreading die designed to restore damaged or corroded external threads on fasteners and threaded rod. It cuts a 1/2-20 UNF right-hand thread profile and seats in a standard 1-inch hex holder or tap wrench. The die is machined from carbon steel, which provides adequate hardness for rethreading bolts, studs, and fittings encountered in general mechanical, plumbing, and HVAC service work. Plumbers, pipefitters, and HVAC technicians use this type of die to salvage threaded components rather than replace them, saving time on service calls.
This rethreading die is suited for field and shop use wherever 1/2-20 UNF fine-thread fasteners have been damaged by rust, thread galling, or cross-threading. Common applications include restoring threads on valve stems, hydraulic fittings, and structural fasteners in residential and light commercial mechanical systems. The right-hand thread direction matches the standard 1/2-20 UNF fastener specification used across a wide range of trade and industrial hardware.
Designed as a replacement-style rethreading die for use with standard 1-inch hex die stocks compatible with 1/2-20 UNF thread profiles.
Installation is performed by hand or with a standard die stock or adjustable tap wrench. Before use, ensure the fastener being rethreaded is clean, deburred, and properly secured. Apply cutting oil to the die and the fastener to reduce friction and extend die life. Back the die off periodically during use to clear chips and prevent binding.
