The IRWIN INDUSTRIAL TOOL CO 53601 is a Number 1 straight flute screw extractor designed to remove damaged or broken bolts and screws from softer materials and thin-walled workpieces such as pipes and fittings. Unlike spiral-flute designs, the straight flute geometry does not expand the surrounding material during extraction, reducing the risk of further damage to the workpiece. This extractor handles both left-hand and right-hand threaded fasteners in the 3/16 to 5/16 inch range (5 mm to 8 mm). It is used by plumbers, pipefitters, electricians, and general trade mechanics when removing seized or broken fasteners from pipe fittings, conduit bodies, and similar thin-walled components.
The 53601 is suited for residential and light commercial service work where fastener removal from soft or thin-walled materials is required. Typical applications include extracting broken screws and bolts from copper or plastic pipe fittings, electrical enclosures, and other assemblies where preserving the integrity of the surrounding material is critical. A 9/64 inch pilot drill bit is required for proper use. This extractor is sold as a single unit.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement-grade hand tool for use with standard screw extractor sets; fits Number 1 extractor size applications requiring a 9/64 inch pilot hole and handling fastener diameters of 3/16 to 5/16 inches.
A licensed mechanic, plumber, or electrician typically uses this extractor as part of a fastener removal procedure. Before beginning, de-energize or depressurize the assembly being serviced per applicable codes. Drill the pilot hole with a 9/64 inch bit centered on the broken fastener before inserting the extractor. Apply steady, controlled torque with a tap wrench or locking pliers — do not use impact drivers on screw extractors, as shock loading can cause the extractor to fracture.
