The IRWIN 49618 is a brad point drill bit designed for clean, accurate entry in wood and wood-composite materials. The brad point tip scores the surface before the flutes engage, reducing walkout and tearout on the exit side. Built from carbon steel with a bright finish, this bit measures 1/2 inch in diameter with a 3-31/32 inch flute length and a 5-15/16 inch overall length. The 3/8 inch shank keeps it compatible with standard three-jaw drill chucks. Two flutes clear chips efficiently during the cut. Woodworkers, trim carpenters, and general contractors reach for this bit when hole placement accuracy matters.
This bit is suited for residential and light commercial carpentry applications. Common uses include boring holes for dowels, shelf pins, wood screws, and cable pass-throughs in solid wood, plywood, MDF, and similar materials. At 1/2 inch diameter, it handles a wide range of framing and finish carpentry tasks. The bright finish indicates an uncoated surface, which is typical for carbon steel bits used in wood where heat buildup is minimal compared to metal-cutting applications.
Designed as a standard brad point drill bit for use in any 3/8 inch or larger keyed or keyless drill chuck, including corded and cordless drill drivers commonly used in woodworking and carpentry applications.
This bit is installed and operated by carpenters, woodworkers, and general tradespeople using standard drill equipment. Secure the 3/8 inch shank firmly in the chuck before operation and verify the workpiece is clamped or otherwise stabilized. Use appropriate feed pressure for the material to avoid overheating the carbon steel tip. Carbon steel bits are not rated for use in metal or masonry and should not be substituted for twist or masonry drill bits in those applications.
