The IRWIN 49615 is a brad point drill bit designed for clean, accurate entry in wood and wood-composite materials. The sharpened center point registers the bit on the workpiece before the cutting edges engage, reducing wander and tear-out at hole entry. Built from carbon steel with a bright finish, this bit measures 5/16 inches in diameter with a 2-15/16 inch flute length and a 4-19/32 inch overall length. It features two flutes that clear chips efficiently during boring. The 5/16 inch shank seats directly in standard drill chucks without adapters. This is a single-piece, individually packaged bit suited for bench work, framing, and finish carpentry applications.
This bit is used in residential and light commercial woodworking tasks where hole location precision matters. Typical applications include dowel boring, shelf-pin drilling, and pilot-hole work in solid wood, plywood, MDF, and similar substrates. Carpenters, cabinetmakers, finish tradespeople, and general contractors commonly stock this size for everyday boring tasks. The 5/16 inch diameter is a standard size for shelf-pin jigs and common dowel stock.
Designed as a standard brad point drill bit for use with corded or cordless drills and drill presses equipped with a chuck accepting a 5/16 inch round shank.
Install this bit in any drill or drill press with a properly sized chuck and tighten securely before use. Confirm the workpiece is clamped or otherwise secured before drilling to prevent movement. Use appropriate feed pressure for the material being drilled to avoid overheating the carbon steel cutting edges. Disconnect or de-energize the drill before changing bits.
