The IRWIN 1755ZR is a straight flute hand tap designed to cut M16x1.5 metric fine internal threads in through-holes and blind holes where chip evacuation is manageable. Built from carbon steel with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap features four flutes and a plug chamfer, making it well suited for general-purpose threading in softer ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 threads of lead — positions this tap between a taper and a bottoming style, providing a balanced combination of starting ease and thread depth capability. Class of fit is 2B, the standard tolerance for most metric fastener applications.
This tap is used in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and field service environments where metric fine threads are required. Right-hand thread cutting direction makes it compatible with standard tap wrenches and T-handle drivers. Straight flutes make this tap most effective in through-holes or short blind holes where chips can be cleared without a spiral flute to advance them. Always secure the workpiece before tapping and use appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded to reduce friction and extend tap life. Straight flute taps do not advance chips out of the hole — back the tap out periodically to clear chips and prevent binding, especially in deeper holes. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, and never force a tap that has stalled, as carbon steel taps are more susceptible to breakage under shock loads than high-speed steel alternatives. Disposal of broken taps embedded in workpieces requires EDM or professional extraction and is a costly outcome to avoid.
