The IPEX 36440 is a 1-1/2 inch Schedule 80 PVC close nipple designed for use in pressurized piping systems handling potable water and chemically aggressive fluids. The close pattern provides the shortest possible threaded connection between two female-threaded fittings or valves. Manufactured from PVC conforming to ASTM D1784, D1785, and D2467, this nipple is injection molded with uniform material reinforcement in stress concentration areas to deliver improved pressure handling capability. The gray PVC construction offers strong resistance to corrosion and a wide range of chemicals, reducing long-term maintenance demands. Temperature rating is 140 degrees F.
This nipple is suited for residential and light commercial plumbing, irrigation, industrial process piping, and pool or spa circulation systems where a compact male-threaded-to-male-threaded connection is required. The 1-1/2 inch size is a common dimension in branch lines, equipment connections, and valve assemblies. Its smooth interior walls reduce friction loss and support higher flow volume compared to equivalent metal fittings. Applications listed by the manufacturer include potable water systems meeting NSF standards.
Designed for use in 1-1/2 inch Schedule 80 PVC piping systems with female NPT-threaded fittings, valves, and equipment connections in potable water, irrigation, pool, spa, and industrial process applications meeting NSF standards.
Installation is performed by licensed plumbers or qualified pipefitters following applicable IPC or local plumbing code requirements. Apply an NSF-approved thread sealant or PTFE tape to the male threads before assembly — do not use sealants that are incompatible with PVC. Hand-tighten first, then use a strap wrench to avoid over-torquing, which can crack Schedule 80 PVC fittings. Shut off and depressurize the system completely before removing or replacing any threaded components.
