The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 6401273 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the TDT-RU series specification, it carries a TT9080 manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied AlTiN and TiN coating for extended tool life in demanding cutting conditions. The insert has a 0.157 inch cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 0.709 inches, making it well suited for medium-depth grooving passes. A positive rake geometry and RU chip breaker work together to promote clean chip evacuation and reduce cutting forces. This insert is installed and used by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
The 6401273 is appropriate for grooving applications on ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials where controlled chip flow and surface finish consistency are priorities. The neutral hand orientation allows use in standard radial grooving setups without directional restriction. Its clamp-style insert holding method is compatible with toolholders designed for the TDT series, and the 90-degree lead angle suits face and OD grooving profiles. This insert is a multi-use tool, supporting both grooving and light turning operations depending on toolholder configuration.
Designed for use with TDT-RU series toolholders that accept size code 4 grooving inserts with clamp-style insert retention. Confirm toolholder series and pocket dimensions against insert size code 4 specifications before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a stopped and locked-out state before handling inserts. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and verify the clamp is torqued per the toolholder manufacturer's specification before beginning a cut. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition before each use; a chipped or worn edge should be indexed or replaced rather than returned to service. Follow shop safety protocols for handling carbide tooling, as carbide edges are brittle and can fracture under impact.
