The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 6164641 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNMX series, designed for precision finishing operations on difficult-to-machine materials. It carries an AlTiN and TiN dual coating applied via PVD process, delivering high wear resistance suited to stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. The insert geometry is a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.008 inch corner radius, and four usable cutting edges. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.039 inches, this insert is configured specifically for finishing passes where surface finish and dimensional accuracy are critical. Machinists and CNC turning specialists working in aerospace, medical, and high-alloy fabrication shops are the primary users.
This insert is suited for external and internal turning operations targeting stainless steel (ISO material group M), superalloys, and titanium (ISO material group S). The FS chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts, promoting controlled chip formation at shallow depths of cut. It fits toolholders accepting VNMX-style inserts secured by clamp-style insert holding. The insert is sold individually with a minimum order quantity of 10 units, making it appropriate for shop stocking programs where consistent tooling grades are required across multiple turning centers.
Designed for use in VNMX-style clamp-type turning toolholders accepting inserts with ANSI code VNMX2.530.5 and ISO code VNMX130402. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and seating clearance before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop and lockout/tagout procedure applied before any insert change. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and secure the clamp according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the cutting edge and corner radius condition before each use, and index or replace the insert at the first sign of chipping, built-up edge, or dimensional drift in the finished workpiece.
