The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 5520478 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal on difficult-to-machine materials. Catalogued under the CNMG series, this insert carries the TT9215 manufacturer grade and features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN for wear resistance and thermal stability. The 80-degree diamond insert shape (shape code C) provides a strong cutting edge geometry suited to interrupted and continuous cuts. The negative rake angle and neutral hand orientation make it adaptable across a range of toolholder setups. It is used by machinists and CNC lathe operators in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is engineered for primary use on stainless steel, super-alloys, and titanium workpieces (ISO material codes M and S). The ET chip breaker geometry is optimized to control chip formation on tough, work-hardening materials common in aerospace, medical, and energy-sector machining. With a maximum depth of cut of 0.276 inches and a 5/8-inch inscribed circle, it suits moderate to heavy turning passes. A clamp-style insert holding method is used, consistent with standard CNMG-compatible toolholders found throughout industry. The tolerance code M and clearance code N align with standard CNMG dimensional specifications.
Designed for use in CNMG-compatible clamp-style toolholders. ANSI code CNMG543ETTT9215 and ISO code CNMG160612ET TT9215 can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder bores and shim configurations. Verify toolholder insert seat size against the 5/8-inch inscribed circle and 1/4-inch insert thickness before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating, indexing, or replacing any cutting insert. Use the correct torque wrench and clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert - do not overtighten or use improvised tools. Inspect the insert pocket and shim for chips or debris before seating to avoid cracking the carbide substrate.
