The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 5518158 is a CPMT-style indexable turning insert designed for metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied TiCN/Al2O3/TiN multilayer coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during steel machining operations. It features a diamond-shaped (C) insert geometry with an 80-degree included angle, a positive rake configuration, and a PC chip breaker. With two cutting edges and a neutral hand orientation, it suits a wide range of general turning applications on ferrous workpieces. The insert is held in place by a screw-lock method for secure, repeatable positioning.
This insert is rated for primary use on steel workpieces (ISO material code P) and is suited for finishing and light roughing passes on CNC turning equipment. The PC chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip control at moderate depths of cut up to 0.0790 inches. The TT5100 grade with CVD coating is optimized for continuous and mildly interrupted steel cutting, making it a practical choice for production turning in job shops and manufacturing facilities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators handling steel turning work are the primary installers and users of this insert.
Designed for use in CPMT-style screw-lock turning toolholders that accept a 1/4-inch inscribed circle diamond insert. ANSI code CPMT21.51PCTT5100 and ISO code CPMT060204PC TT5100 identify compatible toolholder seats.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key driver specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the clamp screw - do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamp screw condition before seating a new insert. Index to the second cutting edge only after the first edge shows wear; do not attempt to regrind solid carbide inserts.
