The INGERSOLL CUTTING TOOLS 5517931 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPGX series, designed for precision metal-cutting operations on CNC and manual lathes. This left-hand insert features a 60-degree triangular shape with three cutting edges, a 0.2 mm corner radius, and a dual PVD coating of TiCN and TiN that improves wear resistance and extends tool life. With a 5.56 mm inscribed circle and a maximum depth of cut of 2.0 mm, it is well suited for light to moderate finishing and semi-finishing passes. Machinists and tooling technicians are the primary installers of this insert in production turning environments.
This insert is intended for turning applications on cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces, covering ISO material codes K, M, and P. The positive rake geometry and L-style chip breaker help control chip flow during continuous and interrupted cuts on these materials. It is sized to fit TPGX-style toolholders that accept screw-clamped, triangular inserts with a 3.0 mm hole diameter. Typical use cases include OD turning, facing, and profile operations where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are priorities.
Designed as a screw-clamped replacement insert for TPGX-style toolholders accepting triangular inserts with a 3.0 mm hole diameter and a 5.56 mm inscribed circle. ISO designation for this insert is TPGX090202L PV3010. Primary workpiece materials are cast iron (K), stainless steel (M), and steel (P).
Installation is performed by machinists or tooling technicians using the appropriate Torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw - always de-energize the machine and engage all safety locks before indexing or replacing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before torquing the screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value. Inspect the pocket for chips or debris prior to seating a new edge, as contamination can cause insert rocking and premature edge failure. Follow the machine tool manufacturer's guidelines and applicable shop safety procedures when setting tool offsets after an insert change.
