The IMPORT BDNA-20723 is a straight flute tap designed for cutting internal 5/16-18 UNC right-hand threads in a wide range of materials. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a gold oxide coating, this tap offers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance during the threading operation. It features a taper chamfer, which gradually introduces the cutting action and helps align the tap in the starting hole. With 4 flutes and an H3 thread limit, it is suited for producing threads with the controlled tolerances required in production and maintenance work. Licensed machinists and trade technicians are the primary users.
This tap is used in metalworking applications across manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul environments. The taper chamfer design makes it well suited for starting threads in through-holes where gradual engagement reduces the risk of tap breakage. The 5/16-18 UNC thread form is one of the most common inch-series fastener sizes in HVAC, plumbing, electrical panel, and light structural assemblies, making this tap a standard shop and field tool for trade professionals.
Designed as a standard replacement or shop tap for cutting 5/16-18 UNC internal threads in through-hole applications across ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Use a calibrated tap wrench or tapping head to maintain proper axial alignment during thread cutting. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Always clear chips regularly when tapping deeper holes to prevent binding. Power down any associated equipment and secure the workpiece firmly before beginning the tapping operation.
