The IMPORT 20848 is a mechanics-length drill bit designed for precision hole-making in ferrous and hard metals. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish, it features a 135-degree split point that reduces walking on contact and requires less feed pressure than a standard 118-degree geometry. At 0.076 inches in diameter with a 2-inch overall length and a 1-inch flute length, this bit fits applications where a short, rigid cutting tool is needed. The straight-cylindrical shank seats directly in standard drill chucks without adapters. Right-hand cut, spiral flute, web-thinned construction rounds out the feature set.
Mechanics-length drill bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which increases rigidity and reduces deflection in tight-clearance or confined work areas. This bit is suited for use on carbon steel, cast iron, high alloy steel, high tensile strength alloys, stainless steel, and general steel stock. It is a general-purpose option appropriate for maintenance, fabrication, and service work where controlled, accurate drilling in hard materials is required. Licensed tradespeople in HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical service regularly use mechanics bits for drilling through equipment panels, brackets, and structural steel components.
Designed as a general-purpose mechanics-length drill bit for use in standard drill chucks accepting straight-cylindrical shanks; suitable for hand drills, drill presses, and similar equipment used in ferrous metal drilling applications.
Install in a calibrated drill chuck and tighten securely before use. Secure the workpiece with a vise or clamp before drilling — never hand-hold small metal parts. Apply cutting fluid when drilling stainless steel or high alloy materials to extend bit life and improve cut quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or wear is observed.
