The ICM CONTROLS 860C is a voltage-sensing motor starter designed for single-phase compressor motors rated from 2 to 5 horsepower. Using patented differential voltage sensing circuitry, the 860C continuously monitors auxiliary compressor voltage to detect motor state and precisely engages and disengages the start capacitor at the correct moment. A built-in timed safety circuit automatically removes the start capacitor from the circuit if the motor fails to start within 2 seconds, protecting both the capacitor and the compressor from damage. The unit operates across a wide voltage range of 90 to 277 VAC, making it compatible with most residential and light commercial single-phase supply voltages. Licensed HVAC technicians are the primary installers.
The 860C is suited for residential and light commercial HVAC applications where hard-starting compressors require additional starting torque. It is commonly installed on air conditioning and heat pump systems with compressor motors in the 2 to 5 HP range. The wide input voltage range and broad operating temperature rating of -40 degrees F to 149 degrees F (-40 degrees C to 65 degrees C) make it adaptable to a range of field conditions including outdoor condensing unit installations.
Designed as an OEM-style hard-start kit for single-phase compressor motors in the 2 to 5 HP range operating on 90 to 277 VAC single-phase power supplies.
Installation is performed by a licensed HVAC technician. Disconnect and lock out all power to the condensing unit before servicing capacitors or wiring. Start capacitors store a lethal charge even after power is removed — discharge existing capacitors using a rated discharge tool before handling. Follow NEC guidelines for low-voltage control wiring and ensure all connections are secure and rated for the operating voltage.
