The ICM CONTROLS 855 is a PTCR (Positive Temperature Coefficient Resistor) hard start kit designed to improve compressor startup performance in single-phase motor applications. It uses positive coefficient technology to deliver a strong starting torque boost, then rapidly reduces its assistance once the motor reaches operating speed. Compatible with capacitor ranges of 43-52 microfarads (MFD) at 330 volts, and rated for a wide supply voltage range of 115-288 VAC, the 855 fits a broad range of residential and light commercial equipment. HVAC technicians install this kit to address hard-starting compressors and extend compressor life.
The 855 is suited for single-phase compressor applications up to 1.5 HP, with a full operating range spanning 1/2 to 10 HP. It is commonly installed in residential split systems, window units, mini-splits, and similar equipment where compressors struggle to start due to low voltage conditions, worn capacitors, or high back-pressure situations. It works alongside an existing run capacitor and does not require a relay, simplifying the installation process.
Designed for single-phase compressor applications with run capacitors in the 43-52 MFD range. Operating voltage must fall within 115-288 VAC. Recommended for compressors up to 1.5 HP; rated range extends from 1/2 to 10 HP.
A licensed HVAC technician should install this hard start kit. Disconnect and lock out all power to the unit before beginning work, and discharge the existing run capacitor fully before handling. The 855 connects in parallel with the existing run capacitor — verify capacitor MFD rating is within the 43-52 MFD range before installation. Follow all applicable local codes and manufacturer wiring diagrams during service.
