The HOUGEN 18244 is a carbide-tipped annular cutter designed for cutting clean, full-diameter holes in metal plate and structural steel. With a 1-3/8 inch cutting diameter and a 2 inch depth of cut, this cutter handles deep-penetration work that twist drills cannot match. The 3/4 inch shank diameter features two flats for positive drive engagement in compatible magnetic drill press chucks and arbors. The oxide straw finish provides mild surface protection. Carbide tipping extends tool life significantly compared to high-speed steel on abrasive or harder materials. This cutter is suited for fabrication shops, ironworkers, pipefitters, and structural steel contractors who require consistent hole quality and repeatable dimensions.
The HOUGEN 18244 is used in magnetic drill press applications on structural steel, mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and similar metal workpieces. Typical install scenarios include beam and column drilling on job sites, steel fabrication in shop environments, and maintenance work where a portable mag drill is used in place of a stationary drill press. The cutter is designed for use with coolant or cutting oil to extend carbide life and improve chip evacuation on deeper cuts.
Designed for use with magnetic drill presses and drill press arbors that accept a 3/4 inch flatted shank. Material application includes aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, and general steel.
Annular cutters are installed by licensed machinists, ironworkers, pipefitters, and structural fabricators using magnetic drill presses. Ensure the drill press is powered off and de-energized before inserting or removing the cutter from the chuck. Apply cutting oil or an appropriate metalworking coolant to the cutter during operation to prevent premature carbide wear and reduce heat buildup. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the cutter if carbide tips are chipped or worn to avoid poor hole quality or tool breakage.
