The HOUGEN 17834 is a cobalt annular cutter designed for fast, clean through-holes in steel and other ferrous metals. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it cuts a 1-1/16 inch diameter hole to a full 1 inch depth without the material removal waste of a twist drill. The 5/8 inch Rotaloc twist-style bayonet shank locks directly into compatible magnetic drill presses and annular cutter holders. The bright, uncoated finish is standard for cobalt cutters and works across a wide range of ferrous workpieces. Ironworkers, structural steel fabricators, pipefitters, and millwrights rely on annular cutters like this for clean, burr-minimal holes in plate and structural sections.
This cutter is suited for use in magnetic drill presses equipped with a 5/8 inch Rotaloc or compatible bayonet-style chuck. Typical applications include drilling holes in structural steel plate, angle iron, channel, I-beams, tube steel, and similar ferrous stock. It is commonly used on job sites and in fabrication shops where a standard twist drill would be too slow or would require step drilling. The 1 inch depth of cut accommodates most standard steel plate and structural member thicknesses encountered in commercial and industrial metalwork.
Designed for use with magnetic drill presses and annular cutter holders equipped with a 5/8 inch Rotaloc twist-style bayonet connection. Verify chuck compatibility with your specific magnetic drill press model before installation.
Annular cutters are installed and serviced by ironworkers, structural fabricators, and pipefitters using compatible magnetic drill presses. Always ensure the magnetic drill base is fully energized and seated on a clean, flat ferrous surface before beginning a cut. Insert a pilot pin through the cutter arbor to prevent slug ejection during through-hole completion. Never run the cutter without cutting fluid or paste lubricant on ferrous stock, as dry cutting significantly reduces tool life.
