The HOUGEN 12648 is a high speed steel annular cutter designed for fast, clean hole cutting in ferrous metals. With a 1-1/2 inch cutting diameter and 1 inch depth of cut, it removes only a slug of material rather than a full core, reducing the power needed and extending tool life. The cutter is made from M2 grade high speed steel and finished with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating that reduces friction and heat buildup during cutting. The 3/4 inch Weldon flat shank with two flats provides a secure, positive lock in compatible magnetic drill press chucks. It is a standard choice for structural steel fabrication, ironworking, and maintenance trades.
This annular cutter is suited for drilling through mild steel, stainless steel, and general structural steel in fabrication shops, job sites, and industrial maintenance environments. The 1-1/2 inch diameter makes it a common size for bolt holes, pipe penetrations, and structural connections. It is installed and used by ironworkers, steel fabricators, millwrights, and maintenance mechanics working with magnetic drill presses or annular cutter-compatible drill press spindles. The 1 inch depth of cut accommodates standard structural steel plate and tube wall thicknesses encountered in most field and shop applications.
Designed for use with magnetic drill presses and annular cutter spindles accepting a 3/4 inch Weldon flat shank. Compatible with mild steel, stainless steel, and general structural steel stock.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified trade professionals familiar with magnetic drill press operation and metal cutting safety. Always secure the magnetic drill base fully to the workpiece and confirm the cutter arbor set screw engages the Weldon flat before applying power. Use cutting fluid or cutting oil to manage heat and extend cutter life, especially when cutting stainless steel. Wear appropriate PPE including eye protection and gloves when operating cutting tools on metal.
