The HORN L1141220500TN35 is a solid carbide grooving insert with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, designed for precision grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This left-hand insert carries a manufacturer grade of TN35 and a cutting width of 0.079 inches, making it well suited for tight-tolerance groove work. The maximum depth of cut reaches 0.197 inches, and the insert features a positive rake geometry for cleaner chip evacuation. It is held in place via a screw-clamp method, providing rigid, repeatable positioning during high-cycle production runs. Machinists and toolroom technicians working with steel and carbide-compatible materials are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is intended for grooving applications in metalworking environments, including external grooving, undercutting, and recessing on turned components. The TiN finish improves surface hardness and wear resistance, extending tool life in moderate-speed cutting conditions. The insert size designation is 1220, and it is rated for material grades C5 and C6, making it appropriate for machining carbon steels and alloy steels at standard turning parameters. It is a single-use, non-multi-use insert that is replaced rather than reground when worn.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement grooving insert for HORN toolholders and system components compatible with insert style 114 and insert size 1220. Material grades C5 and C6 indicate suitability for carbon and alloy steel workpieces.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per facility safety procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer specification - do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping seat for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Replace the insert at first sign of chipping, excessive flank wear, or degraded surface finish on the workpiece.
