The HERTEL R837688 is a spiral point extension tap designed for threading M16 x 2 metric coarse holes in production and maintenance machining applications. Built from high speed steel, this plug-chamfer tap drives chips forward ahead of the cut, making it well suited for through-hole tapping. It runs three flutes on a right-hand flute direction with a D7 thread limit and a 6H class of fit, delivering consistent thread tolerance in steel, cast iron, and similar ferrous materials. Overall length is 6 inches, giving machinists the reach needed for recessed or deep-boss hole locations. Weighing approximately 0.06 pounds, it installs in standard tap holders and extension adapters.
This tap is used in general metalworking environments where metric coarse threads are required, including machine shops, maintenance facilities, and manufacturing lines. The spiral point design is the preferred choice for through-hole applications where chip evacuation toward the exit side of the bore is acceptable. The 6H class of fit meets standard metric thread tolerance requirements for most fastener and assembly applications. Right-hand cutting direction aligns with conventional tapping equipment and CNC machining centers equipped with rigid or floating tap holders.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and extension tapping attachments that accept M16 shank tooling. Suitable for through-hole metric coarse tapping in ferrous materials where a 6H class of fit is specified.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician following shop safety procedures. Secure the tap in a properly sized holder before beginning the tapping cycle, and ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the workpiece material and tap diameter. Apply cutting fluid rated for the material being threaded to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Never reverse a broken tap without first relieving cutting pressure, and always inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use.
