The HERTEL R837535T is a standard pipe tap designed to cut National Pipe Taper Fuel (NPTF) threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction in production and maintenance threading applications. The tap features 5 flutes for efficient chip evacuation and is classified as a short projection style, making it suitable for use in confined or recessed bores. The overall length is 4 inches, with a thread length of 1.75 inches and a shank diameter of 1.3125 inches. Machinists, pipefitters, and plumbers use this tap to create leak-resistant NPTF pipe thread connections in pipe fittings, valve bodies, manifolds, and hydraulic blocks.
This tap is suited for threading 1-1/4 inch - 11-1/2 TPI NPTF pipe threads in industrial, commercial plumbing, and mechanical piping applications. It is appropriate for both manual tapping with a tap wrench and machine tapping on drill presses, CNC machining centers, and turret lathes where short projection taps are specified. Typical materials include steel, cast iron, aluminum, and brass pipe fittings. The TiN finish improves hardness and thermal resistance, extending tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps under moderate-to-high production conditions.
Designed for cutting 1-1/4 inch - 11-1/2 NPTF pipe threads in standard pipe fitting bores and threaded connection applications where NPTF thread form is required.
Pipe taps should be installed by a qualified machinist or pipefitter using a properly sized tap wrench or rigid machine tap holder. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and align the tap perpendicular to the drilled hole to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. Do not force the tap through hardened or work-hardened material without proper cutting fluid and controlled feed rate.
