The HERTEL R127553C-S is a standard pipe tap designed for cutting 1/2-14 NPTF threads in metal workpieces. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life in demanding production and maintenance environments. The 4-flute geometry provides chip clearance and stable thread form during tapping operations. With a thread length of 1.375 inches and a shank diameter of 0.6875 inches, it fits standard tap holders used in machining, pipefitting, and mechanical assembly work. Plumbers, pipefitters, and machinists use this tap when cutting or restoring NPTF tapered pipe threads in cast iron, steel, and similar materials.
This tap is suited for creating National Pipe Taper Fuel (NPTF) threads, which are designed for pressure-tight connections without the need for additional sealants. Typical applications include threading pipe fittings, manifold ports, hydraulic components, and mechanical assemblies where a dryseal tapered thread is required. The TiCN finish reduces friction and resists wear, making it appropriate for moderate to high-volume threading operations in shop and field settings.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and machines accepting a 0.6875-inch shank diameter with a 0.515-inch square drive. Suitable for tapping NPTF 1/2-14 threads in ferrous and compatible non-ferrous workpieces.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist, pipefitter, or mechanic using an appropriately sized tap wrench or machine tap holder. Ensure the workpiece is properly secured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 1/2-14 NPTF threads before tapping. Apply a suitable cutting fluid to reduce heat and extend tool life. Do not force the tap if resistance increases suddenly, as this indicates chip packing or misalignment that can cause tool breakage.
