The HERTEL K014517AS is a straight flute tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of materials. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers consistent thread quality in production and maintenance environments. The plug chamfer on this tap makes it well suited for threading through-holes, where the gradual lead eases the cutting action and reduces torque. With 4 flutes and an H11 thread limit, this tap produces threads on the high end of the tolerance range, accommodating plating allowances or close-fit fastener requirements. Overall length is 2.125 inches. It is sold individually and carries a right-hand thread direction.
This tap is used across general machining, metalworking, and maintenance-repair-operations (MRO) settings. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians reach for plug-chamfer taps when threading through-holes in steel, aluminum, brass, and similar workpiece materials. The 8-32 UNC thread size is one of the most common in light hardware, electronics enclosures, instrument panels, and small mechanical assemblies. The straight flute geometry is best suited for shorter chipping materials where chip evacuation back through the flutes is manageable. This tap is not designed for coolant-through delivery.
Designed as a standard 8-32 UNC straight flute plug tap for use in compatible tap holders, tapping heads, and machine spindles that accept the appropriate shank size for this tool class.
Tapping operations should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians following established shop safety practices. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the tap is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage or cross-threading. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
