The HERTEL K011080AS is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-hole applications. This plug-chamfer tap drives chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for production tapping in materials where chip evacuation is critical. Ground from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright finish, it is built for general-purpose threading at 5/16-18 UNC. With 2 flutes and a thread length of 1.125 inches, the K011080AS performs efficiently in hand-tapping operations and machine tapping setups alike. It is an H6 thread limit tap, providing a slightly oversize tolerance for consistent fit with standard UNC fasteners. Machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance professionals use this tap in light to medium production threading work.
This tap is intended for right-hand internal thread cutting in through-hole configurations. The 5/16-18 UNC thread form is one of the most common coarse-thread sizes in general mechanical assembly, making the K011080AS a practical choice for fabrication shops, maintenance departments, and production lines. It functions in a wide range of workpiece materials including mild steel, aluminum, and similar machinable metals where HSS tooling performs reliably. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward rather than packing them into the flutes, which reduces the risk of tap breakage in through-hole passes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard production tap for 5/16-18 UNC through-hole threading applications in general machining and maintenance environments.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to the hole axis before beginning the threading operation. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Do not reverse a spiral point tap into a blind hole, as it is not designed for that application.
