The HERTEL K010450AS is a metric thread forming tap designed for right-hand, through-hole threading applications in metal fabrication and machining work. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form threads by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish and carries a D5 thread limit for use in standard tolerance threading operations. It measures 2.9375 inches in overall length with a 0.625-inch thread length, and features a plug chamfer with 3 to 5 chamfered threads for easy thread starting in through-hole applications.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance machining environments where M3x0.5 metric internal threads are required. The plug chamfer style makes it appropriate for through-hole threading where the tap can pass completely through the workpiece. Machinists, tool and die technicians, and maintenance mechanics install this tap in standard tap handles or machine tapping chucks. No coolant-through capability is present, so conventional flood or manual lubrication is used during the tapping operation.
Designed as a replacement or production-use thread forming tap for through-hole M3x0.5 metric threading operations in standard machine or hand tapping setups.
This tap is installed by machinists and maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench, tapping handle, or machine tapping chuck with an appropriate collet or adapter. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping operation and apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Thread forming taps require more torque than cutting taps and should only be used in materials that allow plastic deformation, such as aluminum, copper, and low-carbon steel. Do not use in brittle materials such as cast iron or hardened steel.
