The HERTEL K010368AS85 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 1/4-20 UNC internal threads in through-hole applications without cutting. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than remove it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This plug chamfer tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating that increases surface hardness and wear resistance. With an overall length of 2.5 inches and a thread length of 1 inch, it is suited for production and maintenance threading operations. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians install this tap in CNC equipment, manual drill presses, or hand tap handles.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in ductile metals such as aluminum, copper, brass, and mild steel where chip evacuation is a concern. The plug chamfer profile, with 3 to 5 chamfered threads, distributes the forming load gradually and makes it practical for both through-holes and moderately deep applications. The H4 thread limit ensures the finished thread falls within the correct tolerance range for standard 1/4-20 UNC fastener fits in general mechanical assemblies and equipment repair work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use thread forming tap for 1/4-20 UNC through-hole threading operations in ductile workpiece materials.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using the appropriate tap holder or chuck sized for the 0.255-inch shank diameter. Power down and lock out any machine before securing the tap in the holder. Thread forming taps require a correctly sized forming tap drill - consult a thread forming drill chart for the proper hole diameter before tapping, as the forming drill size differs from a standard cut tap drill size. Apply a suitable tapping fluid rated for the workpiece material to reduce forming torque and extend tool life.
