The HERTEL K010323AS is a thread forming tap designed for 5-40 UNC internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is ground to an H3 thread limit and features a bottoming chamfer of 1 to 2 threads, allowing it to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole. Overall length is 1.9375 inches with a thread length of 0.625 inches and a shank diameter of 0.141 inches. It is manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright uncoated finish. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians use this tap in production and repair work on ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
This tap is suited for blind hole threading in materials that respond well to cold forming, including low-carbon steel, aluminum, brass, and similar ductile alloys. The bottoming chamfer makes it the correct choice when the threaded zone must extend as close to the bottom of a stopped hole as possible. It is appropriate for use in manual tapping handles, CNC tapping cycles, or drill press setups where the workpiece material and hole preparation meet the requirements for thread forming rather than thread cutting.
Designed for forming 5-40 UNC internal threads in blind holes with a 2B or 3B class of fit. Verify hole diameter against H3 limit tap charts before use to confirm proper material displacement and thread form.
Secure the workpiece and ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct diameter for thread forming prior to tapping. Apply an appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to reduce forming torque and extend tap life. Use a tapping handle, reversible drill, or CNC tapping cycle with synchronization to avoid overloading the tap shank. Inspect the tap for wear or cracking before each use, as thread forming taps are subject to higher torque loads than cutting taps of the same size.
