The HERTEL K010306AS85 is a thread forming tap designed for 2-56 UNC blind hole threading applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cut it, producing stronger threads with no chip generation. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, which improves surface hardness and wear resistance for extended tool life in production environments. At 1.75 inches overall length with a 0.4375-inch thread length, it is sized for small-diameter fastener holes commonly found in precision assemblies. A bottoming chamfer of 1 to 2 threads allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap by hand or with tapping machines.
This tap is suited for forming 2-56 UNC right-hand internal threads in blind holes where chip evacuation is a concern or where maximum thread strength is required. The H2 thread limit designation indicates a close tolerance fit, making it appropriate for precision components in electronics, instrumentation, and light mechanical assemblies. It is well-matched to ductile materials such as aluminum, brass, and mild steel where cold-forming is effective. The bottoming geometry makes it the correct choice when threads must extend as close as possible to the floor of a blind hole.
Designed for forming 2-56 UNC right-hand internal threads in blind holes in ductile workpiece materials. Verify material suitability for cold-forming before use, as thread forming taps require adequate material ductility.
This tap is installed by a machinist or toolmaker using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC tapping cycle. Secure the workpiece before tapping and ensure the pilot hole diameter is correct for the thread forming process, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps for the same thread size. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the workpiece material to reduce galling and extend tap life. Never reverse a forming tap under load without adequate lubrication, and do not exceed the tap's rated speed range for the material being formed.
