The HERTEL K008217AS is a straight flute tap designed to cut internal threads in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it produces right-hand threads to the 8-36 UNF standard with an H2 thread limit and a 2B/3B class of fit. The taper chamfer — typically 7 to 10 threads — guides the tool into the work progressively, reducing torque requirements and improving thread lead accuracy. With 4 straight flutes, this tap is suited for through-hole applications where chips can clear downward or be flushed out. Overall length is 2.125 inches and the part weighs 0.17 pounds.
This tap is used by machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance technicians in production and repair environments. The 8-36 UNF thread size is common in precision assemblies, instrumentation, and light-duty mechanical components where a finer thread pitch than the UNC standard is required. The straight flute geometry is best suited for through holes in materials that produce short, brittle chips — cast iron, brass, and free-machining steels are typical candidates. Manual and machine tapping applications are both supported.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use straight flute tap for standard 8-36 UNF through-hole threading operations. Confirm holder and tap wrench drive size compatibility before installation.
A licensed machinist or qualified maintenance technician should verify correct tap drill size for the 8-36 UNF thread form before tapping. Secure the workpiece firmly and ensure the tap is started square to the drilled hole to prevent thread misalignment or tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material throughout the operation. For machine tapping, set spindle speed conservatively for the material and tap diameter, and confirm the machine is stopped and de-energized before changing tooling.
