The HERTEL K008075AS is a straight flute plug tap designed for cutting 4-36 UNS internal threads in through-holes and blind holes where chip evacuation flows back along the flute. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a bright, uncoated finish, it delivers reliable performance across a range of workpiece materials in production and maintenance environments. The plug chamfer — typically 3 to 5 thread leads — allows easy starting and provides a smooth transition into full thread depth. With an overall length of 1.875 inches and a thread length of 0.5625 inches, this compact tap suits small-fastener applications. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals are the primary users.
This tap is suited for tapping 4-36 UNS threads in light metals, mild steel, and similar machinable materials in both manual hand-tapping and low-speed machine-tapping setups. The right-hand thread direction is the standard orientation for the vast majority of threaded fastener assemblies. The 3-flute geometry balances chip clearance with tool strength at this small diameter. Typical applications include precision instrument work, small-fastener repair, and production tapping of 4-36 threaded holes in machined components.
Designed as a standard OEM-style straight flute plug tap for cutting 4-36 UNS right-hand internal threads; fits standard tap holders and T-handle wrenches sized for the 0.1410-inch shank diameter and 0.1100-inch square drive.
Secure the workpiece and use a correctly sized tap wrench or tapping fixture to maintain axial alignment throughout the cut. Apply a suitable cutting oil or tapping compound before and during tapping to reduce heat and extend tool life. For blind holes, verify hole depth before tapping to avoid bottoming the tap under load. At this diameter, use light, consistent torque and back off periodically to break chips and prevent tap breakage.
