The HERTEL K008022AS25 is a 1-72 UNF straight flute hand tap designed for threading small-diameter fastener holes in metalworking and precision machining applications. Built from high speed steel with a TiN (titanium nitride) coating, this tap offers improved surface hardness and wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS tooling. It features a plug chamfer for general-purpose hand tapping, a 3B class of fit for standard tolerance threaded assemblies, and an H1 thread limit for close control of thread size. Overall length is 1-11/16 inches with a thread length of 3/8 inches. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is suited for hand tapping 1-72 UNF threads in through-holes and blind holes in ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics, and similar materials where fine-pitch, small-diameter internal threads are required. The plug chamfer style — typically 3 to 5 threads of taper — makes it appropriate for starting threads in through-holes or continuing threads after a taper tap in blind-hole applications. It is commonly used in instrument manufacturing, electronics assembly, and precision mechanical work where 1-72 thread series components are specified.
Designed for use in standard tap handles and tapping fixtures that accept the shank size appropriate for 1-72 UNF hand taps. Suitable for cutting 1-72 UNF internal threads per ASME B1.1 unified inch screw thread standards.
This tap is intended for hand tapping operations performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tap wrench or T-handle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is started perpendicular to the hole to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage at this small diameter. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material before beginning the threading operation. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and clear flutes, particularly in blind-hole applications.
