The HERTEL E4040048 is a 4-flute cobalt square end mill designed for general-purpose and high-performance milling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it handles elevated cutting temperatures better than standard HSS tooling, making it a strong choice for stainless steel, alloy steel, and hardened materials. The 3/4-inch cutting diameter pairs with a 3-inch length of cut in a long-series configuration, giving machinists reach for deep-pocket and shoulder-milling operations. A 30-degree helix angle promotes efficient chip evacuation, while the TiN (Titanium Nitride) surface finish reduces friction and extends tool life under continuous cutting loads. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation follow standard convention for vertical and horizontal milling machines and CNC machining centers.
This end mill is suited for job shop and production machining environments where deep pockets, slots, and full-width cuts are common. The centercutting geometry allows direct plunge entry without a pre-drilled hole, which simplifies programming in 3-axis CNC work. The long-series overall length of 5-1/4 inches provides clearance when workholding or fixturing limits access. Typical users include machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators working on manual mills and machining centers in both prototype and production runs.
Designed as a standard 3/4-inch shank square end mill compatible with ER, R8, CAT, BT, and other common tool-holding systems that accept a 3/4-inch straight shank. Verify spindle taper and collet or chuck capacity before installation.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC operator. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is powered down or in an e-stop state before loading or removing tooling. Use a properly sized collet, end mill holder, or set-screw holder torqued to the tool-holder manufacturer specification — do not over-tighten set-screw holders directly against the fluted section. Confirm tool runout with a dial indicator after clamping, and select speeds and feeds appropriate for M42 cobalt tooling and the workpiece material being cut.
