The HERTEL E2040028 is a cobalt square end mill designed for general-purpose milling operations on ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers strong heat and wear resistance, making it well-suited for cutting harder steels and stainless alloys where standard HSS tooling loses its edge. The 7/16 inch cutting diameter and 1-3/4 inch length of cut place this tool in the long-series category. Four right-hand spiral flutes with a 30-degree helix angle promote efficient chip evacuation and smooth cutting action. The bright uncoated finish makes it a reliable choice for shops that prefer to apply their own coatings or work with materials sensitive to coating chemistry.
This end mill is used in vertical machining centers, knee mills, and manual or CNC milling machines across job shop, toolroom, and production environments. The single-end configuration and 1/2 inch shank diameter suit standard ER and straight-shank collet systems. The centercutting geometry allows for direct plunge entry, expanding its usefulness in slotting and pocket-milling applications. It is typically installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals working on steel fabrication, mold work, and general machining tasks.
Designed for use in standard milling machine collet systems accepting a 1/2 inch shank diameter. Suitable for vertical mills, CNC machining centers, and manual knee mills equipped with ER collets, end mill holders, or straight-shank tool holders in the appropriate bore size.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the control is in an e-stop or locked-out state before changing tooling. Seat the 1/2 inch shank fully into the collet or tool holder and torque the retention nut to the tool holder manufacturer specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before engaging the cut, as excessive runout accelerates flute wear and degrades surface finish.
