The HERTEL C.E07.0397 is a cobalt aircraft extension drill bit designed for demanding drilling applications in aerospace, sheet metal, and structural fabrication work. It measures 5/32 inch (0.1563 inch decimal) in diameter with a 12-inch overall length, making it well-suited for deep-reach drilling where standard-length bits cannot access the work area. The 135-degree split point provides self-centering on contact, reducing the need for a center punch on most surfaces. A straw finish indicates the cobalt content and heat treatment that gives this bit its hardness and heat resistance. Machinists, aircraft mechanics, and fabricators working with high-strength alloys rely on this type of bit for consistent performance.
This bit is built for drilling hard materials including stainless steel, titanium, and high-strength alloys commonly found in aircraft structural assemblies and precision fabrication. The 12-inch overall length is the defining characteristic of the aircraft extension design, allowing the bit to reach through structural members, deep fixtures, or stacked material that would block a jobber-length bit. The 2-inch spiral flute length efficiently clears chips during drilling. Right-hand cutting direction is standard for conventional drill press and hand drill operation. General-purpose tool performance rating makes it appropriate across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous base materials encountered in aviation and industrial maintenance environments.
Designed as a standard aircraft extension drill bit conforming to NAS 907, compatible with conventional straight-shank drill chucks accepting 5/32-inch diameter tooling.
This bit is installed and used by machinists, aircraft mechanics, and fabricators using standard drill presses, magnetic drills, or hand-held power drills with a compatible chuck. Secure the workpiece firmly before drilling to prevent movement, and apply cutting fluid appropriate for the base material when drilling hard alloys to extend bit life. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or excessive wear is observed. Follow applicable shop safety standards and wear appropriate eye protection during operation.
