The HERTEL C.4C0.0397 is a taper shank drill bit designed for precision drilling in metal, wood, and general-purpose shop applications. It carries a 5/32-inch (0.1563-inch decimal) cutting diameter and seats into a No. 1 Morse Taper (1MT) spindle. The 118-degree point angle is the standard geometry for general-purpose drilling, providing a self-centering cut that works across a wide range of workpiece materials. The overall length of 5.375 inches and a 2.125-inch flute length give the bit reach and chip clearance suited to drill press and lathe tailstock use. At 0.01 pounds, it is a compact, lightweight tool intended for single-unit use in production or maintenance environments.
This bit is suited for machine shop, maintenance, and fabrication settings where a drill press, turret lathe, or milling machine with a No. 1 Morse Taper spindle is in use. The 5/32-inch diameter is a common size for pilot holes, tapping preparation, and light metalwork. It is typically installed and operated by machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians working to standard shop tolerances.
Designed for use in any machine spindle, drill press quill, or lathe tailstock that accepts a No. 1 Morse Taper (1MT) shank.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with Morse Taper tooling. Before inserting the bit, clean the taper socket and shank with a dry cloth to remove oil, chips, or debris that could prevent full seating. Drive the taper shank firmly into the spindle socket by hand or with a soft mallet to ensure full engagement. To remove, use the appropriate drift key and knockout bar through the spindle slot — never apply lateral force to the bit body.
