The HERTEL C.40N.2778 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, maintenance, and production environments. It features a 1-3/32 inch (1.0938 inch decimal) diameter and a 118-degree split point angle, which is the standard geometry for drilling into steel, cast iron, aluminum, and similar materials. The bit is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright uncoated finish. Its shorter-than-jobber overall length of 6-3/8 inches provides added rigidity, reducing deflection and improving hole accuracy in tight setups or on drill presses and lathes. Machinists, maintenance technicians, and fabricators are the primary users of this bit type.
Screw machine length drill bits are well suited for production drilling operations where rigidity and concentricity matter more than reach. This bit is appropriate for use in drill presses, manual mills, CNC setups, and engine lathes when drilling hole sizes in the 0.6000 inch and above range. The 4-inch flute length provides adequate chip clearance for moderate-depth holes in metal and plastics. The right-hand cutting direction is compatible with standard spindle rotation on all conventional drilling and milling equipment.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard drill presses, lathes, mills, and CNC drilling equipment using appropriate toolholders or drill chucks sized for large-diameter bits.
This bit should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly rated drill chuck or collet system rated for the diameter. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and locked before securing or removing the bit. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve finish quality. Inspect the cutting edges for wear or chipping before each use, and do not exceed the equipment manufacturer's recommended feed and speed ranges for HSS tooling at this diameter.
