The HERTEL 89323802 is a taper shank drill bit designed for heavy-duty drilling in metal, cast iron, and similar ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It accepts a 5 Morse Taper (5MT) shank, making it compatible with large drill presses, lathes, and machining centers that use a matching taper spindle. The bit is ground from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish that provides light corrosion resistance and reduces friction during cutting. The 118-degree point angle is the standard general-purpose geometry suited for a wide range of production and maintenance drilling applications. Overall length is 17.125 inches with a flute length of 10.125 inches, giving adequate chip clearance for deep-hole work in this diameter range.
This bit is sized at 1-25/32 inches (1.7813 inches decimal) and is intended for general-purpose drilling operations in industrial, maintenance, and fabrication settings. Typical users include machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, millwrights, and maintenance technicians working with large drill presses or lathe tailstocks equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper socket. It is sold individually and is well suited to low-cycle production drilling where a standard HSS bit meets the application requirement without the cost of coated or carbide tooling.
Designed for use in drill presses, lathes, and machining centers fitted with a No. 5 Morse Taper (5MT) spindle or tailstock socket. No adapter sleeve is required when the machine spindle matches the 5MT designation.
Installation and removal of taper shank tooling should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or drifting the bit. Clean both the taper shank and the spindle socket thoroughly before insertion to ensure full taper contact and prevent runout. Use the appropriate drift key and a soft-faced mallet to eject the bit — never force the shank with impact on the cutting end.
