The HERTEL 89323596 is a taper shank drill bit engineered for heavy-duty drilling applications requiring a large-diameter, rigid setup. The bit measures 1-35/64 inches (1.5469 inches decimal) in diameter and seats into a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle, making it suited for large drill presses, lathes, and milling machines found in machine shops and industrial fabrication environments. The cutting geometry features a 118-degree point angle, a general-purpose grind appropriate for a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. An oxide finish provides a baseline level of corrosion resistance and reduces friction at the cutting edge. The overall length is 16-5/8 inches with a flute length of 9-5/8 inches, giving the bit significant reach for deep-hole operations.
This drill bit is intended for use in metal fabrication, maintenance and repair operations, and production machining where a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle is available. The large diameter makes it appropriate for boring clearance holes, through-holes, and pilot operations in steel plate, cast iron, aluminum, and similar structural materials. It is typically installed and operated by machinists, tool and die makers, and skilled maintenance technicians working with floor-standing drill presses or Morse taper-equipped lathes and mills.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or new-installation drill bit for any drill press, lathe, or milling machine equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle socket.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing the taper shank. Clean both the spindle bore and the taper shank with a dry cloth before insertion to ensure full metal-to-metal contact and prevent slippage. Use a drift key and the designated drift slot to properly eject the bit from the spindle — do not strike the bit directly.
