The HERTEL 89323299 is a taper shank drill bit sized to Letter E, equivalent to 0.2500 inches (1/4 inch), designed for drilling operations in metal, wood, and general-purpose materials. It uses a 1MT (Morse Taper 1) shank, which seats directly into a compatible taper socket on a drill press, lathe tailstock, or milling machine spindle. The 118-degree point angle is the standard geometry for general-purpose work, providing a balance between centering accuracy and cutting efficiency. The high-speed steel (HSS) construction with an oxide finish gives the bit heat resistance during sustained drilling. Licensed machinists, tool and die workers, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this bit.
This bit fits standard shop environments where a 1MT spindle is available, including drill presses and manual lathes common in light manufacturing, maintenance repair, and tool room applications. The Letter E size is frequently specified when a 0.250-inch diameter hole is required and a taper shank drive is preferred over a straight shank for improved rigidity and torque transfer at higher feed rates. It is suited for general-purpose drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous metals as well as plastics.
Designed for use in any machine spindle, lathe tailstock, or drill press quill that accepts a Morse Taper 1 (1MT) shank. A 1MT-to-chuck adapter or drift slot for removal is standard on compatible machines.
Power down and lock out the machine before inserting or removing the taper shank. Clean both the shank and the socket bore with a lint-free cloth to remove oil, chips, or debris before seating — contaminants under the taper will cause runout and can damage the spindle. Drive the shank into the socket with a firm upward push until it seats; do not strike the cutting end. Use a drift key in the spindle slot to remove the bit, never a screwdriver or improvised tool against the flutes.
