The HERTEL 89323034 is a heavy-duty taper shank drill bit designed for drilling large-diameter holes in metal and other tough materials. It measures 3-1/16 inches (3.0625 inches decimal) in diameter and is built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an oxide finish for added surface protection and chip clearance. The bit features a 5MT (Morse Taper 5) shank for direct mounting in compatible taper-socket spindles, eliminating the need for a separate chuck. With a 118-degree point angle, it is suited for general-purpose drilling in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. Machinists, tool-and-die shops, and heavy fabrication facilities are the typical users for a bit of this size.
This drill bit is intended for use in large floor-standing drill presses, radial arm drills, and horizontal boring mills equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle socket. The 14-inch flute length provides adequate chip evacuation when drilling deep holes, and the 21-3/4-inch overall length (21.75 inches decimal) accommodates the reach required for thick plate and heavy weldment work. General-purpose performance classification makes this bit appropriate for production drilling in job shops and maintenance operations where large-diameter through-holes or blind holes are required.
Designed for use in drill presses, radial arm drills, and boring mills equipped with a No. 5 Morse Taper (5MT) spindle socket.
This bit is installed by a machinist or skilled tradesperson directly into a No. 5 Morse Taper spindle socket — ensure the socket bore and taper shank are clean and free of chips or burrs before seating. Power down and lock out the machine before installing or removing the bit. Use a drift key and a proper strike to remove the bit from the spindle; never hammer directly on the cutting end. Secure workpieces firmly to the table before drilling to prevent rotation under the torque generated by a bit of this diameter.
