The HERTEL 89322978 is a taper shank drill bit designed for large-diameter drilling in metal, cast iron, and similar ferrous materials. It carries a 2-5/16 inch cutting diameter with a 5 Morse taper shank, making it suitable for heavy-duty drill presses and milling machines equipped with a matching taper spindle. The 118-degree split or conventional point geometry provides a self-centering entry appropriate for general-purpose production and maintenance drilling. The high-speed steel construction with an oxide finish offers basic lubricity and corrosion resistance during operation. This bit is handled by machinists and industrial maintenance technicians working in shop or manufacturing environments.
This drill bit is applied in general-purpose metal drilling operations where a No. 5 Morse taper spindle is available. Typical installations include large floor-standing drill presses, radial arm drill presses, and horizontal boring machines in production shops, maintenance departments, and fabrication facilities. The 10.125 inch flute length accommodates deep-hole drilling passes, while the 17.375 inch overall length fits standard 5MT quill depths. It is suited for both one-off and repetitive drilling tasks on structural steel, plate stock, and similar workpieces.
Designed for use in drill press, milling machine, or boring machine spindles with a No. 5 Morse taper socket. A 5MT-to-appropriate-adapter sleeve or drift key is required if the machine spindle does not natively accept a 5MT shank.
Installation and removal of Morse taper tooling should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard shop safety procedures. Power down and lock out the machine before inserting or removing the taper shank. Seat the taper fully into the spindle bore by hand and confirm positive engagement before operation; use a proper drift key in the spindle drift slot to safely eject the bit when changing tooling. Inspect the taper surfaces for nicks or contamination prior to installation, as surface damage will prevent proper seating and can cause the bit to slip under load.
