The HERTEL 89320915 is a screw machine length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in metal, wood, and plastic. Screw machine length bits are shorter than jobber-length bits, which reduces deflection and improves rigidity in tight clearance applications such as drill press work, turret lathes, and screw machine setups. This bit is ground from high-speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish. It cuts in the right-hand direction and features a 118-degree split or conventional point. Wire gauge size 38 corresponds to a decimal diameter of 0.1015 inches. The overall length is 1-13/16 inches with a flute length of 13/16 inches. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This bit is suited for production and maintenance drilling where a compact tool length provides better control and reduced chatter. The screw machine length format makes it appropriate for use in automatic screw machines, CNC lathes, drill presses, and hand-held power drills where a shorter reach is preferred. The 118-degree point geometry is standard for general-purpose work in mild steel, aluminum, brass, thermoplastics, and similar materials. The bright finish is uncoated, making it a cost-effective option for intermittent use and low-heat applications. It is sold as a single bit per package with a minimum order quantity of 12 pieces.
Designed as a general-purpose screw machine length drill bit compatible with standard drill chucks, collets, and quick-change tooling systems that accept the corresponding shank diameter for a wire gauge 38 bit.
Install into a properly sized drill chuck or collet and tighten securely before operation. Ensure the workpiece is clamped or fixtured to prevent movement during drilling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or lubrication when drilling steel to extend tool life and improve hole quality. Inspect the cutting edges before each use and replace the bit if chipping or dulling is observed.
