The HERTEL 88245410 is a single-end roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Manufactured from M42 cobalt high-speed steel, it delivers elevated heat and wear resistance compared to standard M2 tooling, making it well-suited for harder workpiece materials and interrupted cuts. The fine-pitch flute geometry reduces chatter and vibration during heavy roughing passes. At 5/8 inch diameter with a 1-5/8 inch length of cut and 3-3/4 inch overall length, this tool fits standard milling chucks and collets without extended-reach toolholders. The bright, uncoated finish is compatible with a wide range of cutting fluids. It is center-cutting, allowing direct plunge entry into the workpiece. Installed by machinists and toolroom operators on vertical and horizontal milling machines and CNC machining centers.
This end mill is used in production and toolroom milling operations where roughing passes must remove significant stock quickly before finish machining. The 4-flute, right-hand cut and right-hand helix configuration is standard for general-purpose roughing on steel, alloy steel, stainless, and cast iron. The regular-length body keeps the tool stiff, minimizing deflection in deep-pocket or shoulder-milling applications. It is a practical choice for job shops and maintenance machining environments where one tool needs to handle varied material types across multiple setups.
Designed as a standard-shank roughing end mill with a 5/8 inch shank diameter, compatible with ER collet chucks, Weldon-style end mill holders, and milling chucks sized for 5/8 inch tooling on vertical mills, horizontal mills, and CNC machining centers.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the drawbar or tool-retention system is disengaged before inserting or removing the tool. Seat the shank fully into the holder to the recommended engagement depth per the toolholder manufacturer. Verify runout with a dial indicator before taking the first cut, as excessive runout will accelerate flute wear and reduce surface finish quality.
