The HERTEL 87144796 is a single-end roughing end mill engineered for aggressive material removal in ferrous and hard alloy machining operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for improved wear resistance and heat tolerance, this tool handles demanding roughing passes where standard HSS tooling falls short. The 1.5-inch diameter cutting head carries 6 flutes in a coarse-pitch geometry, producing the interrupted chip-breaking action that defines a roughing profile. With a 4-inch length of cut and 6.5-inch overall length, it suits deep-pocket and full-slot roughing applications on vertical mills and machining centers. This is a right-hand cut, right-hand flute tool with no center-cutting capability.
This end mill is suited for use on manual knee mills, CNC vertical machining centers, and similar milling setups where high stock removal rates are needed before a finishing pass. The 1.25-inch shank diameter fits standard R8, CAT, or BT toolholders with the appropriate collet or end mill holder. Typical applications include roughing steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, and other tough materials in job shop, toolroom, and production environments. The coarse pitch reduces harmonic chatter during heavy cuts and lowers cutting forces compared to standard-pitch geometries.
Designed for use in milling machines and machining centers accepting a 1.25-inch shank end mill holder or collet. This tool is not center-cutting and requires a pre-existing feature or pilot hole for any plunge entry.
A licensed machinist or qualified toolroom professional should install and operate this end mill. Always power down and lock out the spindle before loading or removing tooling. Secure the 1.25-inch shank fully within the holder to the minimum insertion depth recommended by the holder manufacturer — inadequate engagement increases runout and risk of pullout under load. Do not use this tool for plunge cuts without a pre-drilled entry, as it is not center-cutting.
