The HERTEL 87144648 is a single-end cobalt roughing end mill designed for aggressive material removal in milling operations. Built from M42 cobalt high-speed steel and coated with TiCN for extended tool life, this end mill handles tough ferrous and non-ferrous materials with a coarse-pitch flute geometry that clears chips efficiently and reduces heat buildup. The 1/2 inch diameter, 4-flute configuration with right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction makes it a reliable choice for roughing passes where stock removal rate takes priority over surface finish. Machinists and toolroom professionals working on manual or CNC vertical mills will find this a straightforward, production-ready option.
This roughing end mill is suited for general-purpose roughing applications in job shops, maintenance shops, and production environments. The coarse pitch serrated cutting edge breaks chips into smaller segments, reducing cutting forces and allowing higher feed rates compared to standard end mills. The 2 inch length of cut and 4 inch overall length position it as a regular-length tool appropriate for moderate-depth pocketing, slotting, and profiling work. It is not center-cutting, so it requires a pre-drilled entry hole or ramping strategy for plunge starts. No extended reach or variable helix geometry is present, keeping setup and runout prediction straightforward.
Designed as an OEM-style roughing end mill for use with standard 1/2 inch collets, end mill holders, or Weldon-style set-screw holders on vertical milling machines and CNC machining centers.
Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the spindle before inserting or removing the tool from the holder. Ensure the shank seats fully in the collet or holder and that the holder is torqued to the machine manufacturer's specification before starting the spindle. Because this tool is not center-cutting, do not plunge directly into solid material without a pre-drilled hole or programmed ramp entry.
